About Me
I consciously discovered the gift of mentorship more than 30 years ago when students and teachers of the Girls High School where I taught and was Principal kept seeking to have time with me, mainly for what I later realized was mentorship. Answering the "How" question while allowing my mentees to take their their own paths in life is a skill I have received training in while practicing for more than 30 years. In 1999, with a team of teachers and students, I team led to create the first Peer to Peer Counselling model in a high school in Kenya. The benefits of this internally trained team of teen girls created safer spaces for students to hold peer to peer conversations, learn from each other and move forward as a team. The most challenging situation then was how students would navigate the stigma associated with some of their parents and family members testing positive for HIV. In a span of two years, the model had been adopted by more than 10 schools. I trained Trainers of Trainers and supported every school to contextualize their own curriculums. When I resigned from my teaching job in 2002 and founded a non-profit in Kenya to support women (read mothers) struggling with the stigma and vulnerabilities of poverty, sex work and other gender based violence ills, (Life Bloom Services International www.lifebloomservices.org. ) I did not have capital to hire enough qualified staff. I mentored the first women beneficiaries on personal leadership. By 2005, I trained the first Peer Educators/Counsellors and Peer Mentors, creating a curriculum and community based model from the needs assessment I carried out on them. By 2009, we had 62 Peer Mentors graduated, bringing about 1600 vulnerable women on board as their mentees. Today, as Life Bloom celebrates 20 years since registration, one of our sustainability pillars is Mentorship, which has become a self propelling Transformational Model with more than 1,800 mentors (women, men, girls and boys). We also boast of a staff engagement Mentor model which a few other organizations have adopted. At a professional level, I have practiced mentoring since 2009, when I graduated from the Women Leaders for the World (WLW) program in California, University of Santa Clara). I have deliberate self growth programs with my mentors, both locally and globally. As a certified Leadership Coach with International Coaching Federation, I bring on board both Coaching and Mentoring expertise/experience as the gifts I share with the world. I practice with Transformational Leadership Training and Coaching Consultancy. I am open to collaborations and partnerships too. Reach out to me and lets explore whether we are a good fit for each other!
